Copernicus’ Sentinel satellites operate continuously and collect terabytes of data each day for six broad-based services. While beneficial to almost every policy sector, this vast amount of data can overwhelm users unable to quickly identify the most relevant information for their needs.
The Knowledge Centre on Earth Observation (KCEO) will address this problem by serving as a focal point directing policy users to the most useful and current products for their individual needs. It will also assess the fitness-for-purpose of existing products with respect to these needs, and thus identify gaps to be considered in the evolution of the programme.
The KCEO aims to act as an efficient internal coordination mechanism inside the European Commission to maximise the use of products and information from Copernicus, and Earth observation more broadly, in EU Policy making and implementation.
