Mechanised earthmoving in mining

May 26 8:00 am May 28 5:00 pm SAST

The Wits Mining Institute’s Centre for Mechanised Mining Systems, in conjunction with the School of Mining Engineering, presents the course “Mechanised earthmoving in mining: Equipment, technology and management”. It is aimed at mining and civil engineering company and project managers, engineers and technicians at technical and managerial levels, who are involved in the various stages of earthmoving.

The course, facilitated by Prof Zvi Borowitsh, aims to provide participants with an understanding of:

  • Advanced manual and computerised techniques for the selection of the most efficient and economical spread of equipment and general layout
  • Equipment economics and earthwork cost evaluation analysis
  • Planning and managing earth-moving projects

Course content:

  • Soil and rock properties
  • Principles of earth moving machine design
  • Machine-job applicability and performance
  • Rock drilling and blasting principles
  • Rock ripping and dozing
  • Earth loading methods
  • Earth hauling and conveying equipment
  • Computerised truck dispatch and GPS earth moving applications
  • Optimising system and job layout selection by advanced manual and computerised techniques
  • Safety on-site

Delegates will also study and personally practice using the most updated computer software such as Talpac by Runge, Dragsim and FPC at the university computer centre or on their own laptops for machine and earth moving simulation, optimising system selection, machine and earth moving cost analysis, and truck dispatching and GPS in earth moving applications.
