The Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information (CD: NGI) is South Africa’s national mapping agency, situated in the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD). It produces national mapping data for South Africa, including orthorectified imagery, elevation data (including DEMS), vector topographic data, as well as raster maps, all of which are available digitally. This includes SA Mapsheet Referencing, elevation data, topographic data (vector), maps and charts (digital/raster or printed). Its data products and services include also includes the popular 1:10 000 orthophoto and 1:50 000 topographic maps, numerous other smaller scale, provincial and national maps.
The CD: NGI Geospatial Geoportal facility provides a graphics user interface for users to interact with geospatial data and to download data content made available in the geoportal. The geoportal will be updated continuously. Other data content services available in the geoportal include Google Earth and Bing Maps. The generic search engine will search the Google Earth data base. Google street view and Google Map navigation can be accessed through the CD: NGI geoportal facility. Users are able to add their own shape files and KML files to the geoportal environment as an overlay to the CD: NGI provided data content.
